AP bags awards at SARAS expo

ANDHRA PRADESH has bagged two awards at the recently-concluded regional SARAS, an exhibition of products from self-help groups (SHGs) of various States at Ahmedabad.

The objective of the SARAS event is to help the SHGs and Swarozgaris derive maximum benefit from the marketing opportunities, enhance their product quality and establish marketing links with other groups. About 300 participants, including 20 SHGs from AP took part.

The Andhra Pradesh team won the best State and the highest sale from individual stall (for Mangalagiri sarees of Kanaka Durga SHG). Products such as handlooms of Pochampally, Venkatagiri, Narayanpet, Gadwal, Kalamkari items, handicrafts, toys, readymade garments, pickles and leather goods were on exhibit.

The Commissioner, Women Empowerment & Self Employment, AP, Mrs C. Suvarna, said about 25 SHGs from the State would be taking part in the upcoming SARAS, 2004 being organised by the Union Ministry of Rural Development at New Delhi's Pragathi Maidan during November 14-27.
