Health Diabetes awareness walk on Sunday Our Bureau
Bangalore , Nov. 10 THIS Sunday in Bangalore, you could walk with one of the icons of the cricketing world - for a cause. Former Pakistani skipper Wasim Akram is also a model diabetic; and who else can tell the world how to beat the disease than one who has had some top international achievements until recently with the ball and the bat? On November 14, which is World Diabetes Day, Biocon Ltd has organised `Winning with Diabetes' walk as part. The awareness drive also coincides with Biocon's entry into the human insulin market with its Insugen brand. Biocon is also launching a special educative portal on diabetes, www.insugen.com on that day, its CMD, Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said today. Bangalorean and Chief Mentor of Infosys, Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, is among the famous afflicted ones. One in five urban residents has diabetes caused due to hereditary factors, sedentary lifestyles and wrong diet. According to Dr Arvind Atignal, COO of Biocon subsidiary, Clinigene International, diabetes causes the second highest number of limb amputations after motor and other accidents. Awareness, education of patients through doctors and making suitable changes in the lifestyle in advance can combat or prevent the onset of the disease. Called the killer drug, diabetes also affects the vital organs - eye, kidneys, heart, brain and nerves. "You manage the diabetes or it manages you," said Ms Mazumdar-Shaw.
