`Demand for cement poised to grow'

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Nov. 10

THE demand for cement will continue to grow at 8 to 9 per cent per annum as the rise in consumption would be fuelled by a strong growth in the housing sector and the Government's thrust on infrastructure development, said Mr O.P. Puranmalka, Chief Marketing Officer of the Aditya Birla (AB) group's UltraTech Cement Ltd (UCL).

Launching UltraTech Cement, the new name of L&T Cement, here on Wednesday, Mr Puranmalka said that UCL has earmarked Rs 15 crore for the promotion of UltraTech brand till March 31, 2005.

The company plans to hold road shows and customers meetings over the next two months.

Following acquisition of 51 per cent stake in the L&T cement unit, he said, the market share of the AB group in Andhra Pradesh (AP) had gone up to 20 per cent. The AB group's cement capacity had also gone up to 31 million tonnes per annum making it the eighth largest cement player in the world.

Mr Puranmalka said that the cement consumption in AP was expected to go up 10 to 11 per cent during the second half of the current fiscal as the State Government was taking up various infrastructure projects.
