New anti-depressant drug from Torrent

THE Ahmedabad-based Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd has launched Duloxetine, a new-age anti-depressant under the brand name `Symbal'.

The new drug claims to address not only the emotional aspects of depression like other available drugs, but also treats physical symptoms that accompany major depressive disorder (MDD), such as aches, pains and gastro-intestinal disturbances, a company release said here.

Claimed to be the first in a new class of anti-depressants known as Selective Serotonin Norepinephrine Re-uptake Inhibitor (SSNRIs), the new drug ensures rapid and sustained efficacy in the treatment of both emotional and physical symptoms of depression.

The Rs 513-crore Torrent is aiming at a sales turnover of Rs 5 crore from Symbal in the first year in the anti-depressant market that is worth Rs 250 crore and is growing at 11 per cent, the release said.
