People Kanchi Sankaracharya held in murder case Our Bureau
Chennai , Nov. 12 THE Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi, who was arrested near Hyderabad last night in connection with a murder of a temple official, was today remanded to 15 days judicial custody. He has been lodged in the Vellore Prison. A bail application in the Madras High Court by the Sankaracharya's lawyer has been posted for hearing on Tuesday. The High Court will take up for hearing tomorrow a plea to place the Sankaracharya under house arrest rather than lodge him in a jail. A special police team from Tamil Nadu arrested him at Mehboobnagar, 90 km from Hyderabad. He was arrested for alleged involvement in the murder of one Sankararaman, the manager of the Varadaraja Perumal Temple at Kanchipuram, last September. The Sankaracharya was brought to Chennai by a special flight from Hyderabad, taken to Kanchipuram, where the Mutt is located, about 70 km from Chennai, and produced before a magistrate, who remanded him to 15 days judicial custody.
