Trade & Labour Unions SBI unions call for strike on Dec 6, 7 L.N. Revathy
Coimbatore , Nov. 13 SBI Staff Union and SBI Officers' Association have called for a two-day strike on December 6 and 7. According to union sources, this could culminate in an indefinite strike from December 27 if the country's largest bank failed to relent on the unions' charter of demands. It was only on November 5 that the entire SBI workforce struck work to express their displeasure over the management's stand on their demands, which included a proportionate reduction in the interest rate on staff loans in tune with the rates offered to the public, enhancement of welfare fund and a re-look at the compassionate appointment scheme. The employee federation has unanimously decided to intensify the `work-to-rule and non-cooperation struggle' with immediate effect. The employees allege that the management has failed to protect their interest in the area of welfare activity. "The allocation available in the last seven years is less than 3 per cent. The total loss to the employees on account of the welfare activities over the last five years is substantial. We demand a review of the ceiling on the basis of current profits," the Organising Secretary of the SBI Staff Union (Chennai Circle), Mr K.S. Suryanarayanan, said, adding that the rate of interest on home loans for staff fixed a couple of years ago had not been reviewed, resulting in a penalised rate structure for the staff while the public enjoyed a lower rate including `festive offers'. He contended that the cost of servicing staff advances was `nil' and the recovery cent per cent. The federation has called upon its members to intensify agitation by refusing to sit late or work on holidays and Sundays. It has also asked them to boycott work connected with offsite ATMs, including cash replenishment.
