ICC to hold workshop on Haldia project

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Nov. 15

THE Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) here is organising a workshop, as part of a European Commission-funded project to set up a management information system called Environmental Risk Reporting and Information System (ERRIS) at Haldia and Durgapur.

The workshop will be held at Haldia on Tuesday, in association with the Haldia Development Authority, to initiate work on the project with potentially hazardous industries in Haldia among other stakeholders.

While ICC has been working on the project, the Haldia authority has agreed to be the local partner and help in the implementation with a long-term view to promoting Haldia as an investment destination where potential risks arising out of hazardous industries are effectively addressed.

According to ICC, the objective of the ERRIS involving hazardous industries and their operations would be to prevent accidents that could be of harm to human health, the environment and property. The groups that the initiative targets include are corporate houses, industries located in industrial townships, regulatory agencies in the region and vulnerable communities in these townships.

The project aims at putting in place a transparent framework for industrial risk management by urging industries to proactively share risk-related information for the benefit of all stakeholders. The information gathered would then be presented to the stakeholders through a spatial information system using geographic information system (GIS) technology, according to ICC.
