THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Government has nominated Dr K.P. Kannan, Fellow and Director of the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, as a full-time Member of the newly constituted National Commission on Informal Sector.

Dr Arjun Sengupta, former member-secretary of the Planning Commission, is the Chairman of the commission. The other full-time Member is Dr K. Jayashankar, former Vice-Chancellor of Warangal University.

The terms of reference of the commission focus on three core areas concerning the informal, or unorganised, sector. These are enterprise development, employment promotion and extension of social security. The objective of the commission is to develop this sector for achieving higher growth as well as providing employment with social security. The term of the commission is one year.
