Kerala plans ornamental fish breeding

KOCHI: The State Government is planning to open ornamental fish breeding centres at Kochi and Kollam to promote ornamental fish farming among youth and women, Mr Dominic Presentation, the State Fisheries Minister has said.

Apart from providing support to market fish bred in these units, the Government would also plans to undertake campaigns for setting up aquariums in all the houses in the State, he told reporters here.

The Minister said that a six-day international ornamental fish exhibition would begin at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, Kaloor on Wednesday. Ornamental fish varieties from Sri Lanka, Dubai, Maldives and Taiwan would be exhibited during the event.

The Central and State fisheries research institutes, Fisheries Departments of various State Governments and Agricultural Colleges would be participating in the exhibition. Featuring nearly 10,000 ornamental fishes, the exhibition would be inaugurated by Mr Therambil Ramakrishnan, Kerala Assembly Speaker.
