Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables Thanjavur belt farmers resort to distress sale Our Correspondent
Madurai , Nov. 16 THE recent heavy rains have affected not only the samba crop but also the alternate crops in the Thanjavur belt. Farmers in the district had taken to raising alternate crops, cultivating pumpkins, ashgourds, brinjals, radish, betelvine and tapioca due to the successive drought situation in the preceding years. The surplus water this year has played havoc with these crops too. Pumpkin raised over 1,000 acres are severely affected. Crops with flowers and tender pumpkins are the worst hit. According to a farmer, the yield has got reduced to half. Coupled with a fall in prices, farmers are forced to resort to distress sale. Where they used to get 15 tonnes of pumpkin per acre earlier, this year the yield is around 8 tonnes. They are selling them at Rs 3 per kg, against Rs 6 per kg during normal times, he said.
