TN Bills to toughen video piracy laws

Our Bureau

Chennai, Nov. 17

THE Tamil Nadu Government has introduced Bills to amend legislations to enhance penalties for video piracy.

They take effect from October 1, 2004, and replace ordinances promulgated earlier. The objective is to protect the film industry from the adverse impact of piracy, which also posed a threat to public order.

The Government has also amended the Entertainment Tax Act, 1939, giving effect from October 4 to the concessions it had announced.

It has brought down the entertainment tax to 15 per cent of the gross payment for admission from 25 per cent for new films and to 10 per cent for old films from 20 per cent levied earlier.
