Information Technology HK-Seoul Ethernet interface on Juniper routing platform V. Rishi Kumar
Hong Kong , Nov. 17 IN a significant initiative, Juniper Networks Inc on Wednesday demonstrated the foundations of infranet vision, in the form of assured quality real-time video conferencing between Hong Kong and Seoul. Given the current trends, more carriers could join this initiative for enhanced and superior quality of services. The demonstration used service from partners KT (formerly Korea Telecom), Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) and Polycom. The demonstration showed improvements in video and audio quality between the two cities, with user and application control via emerging new interface standards between networks and also between the customer's application and the network. The demo showcased the ability of the two interfaces to set up and maintain network policy controls such as quality of service (QoS) when video calls and other highly demanding traffic cross from one service provider's network to another. The demonstration used Juniper Networks SDX-300 Service Deployment System and Polycom's video conferencing system to automatically upgrade session bandwidth and QoS based on appropriate video service requirements, network resources and subscriber service options on the world's first Metro Ethernet interconnection between two service providers, HGC in Hong Kong and KT in Seoul. The two carriers have deployed Juniper's routing platforms to launch the first production Inter-Autonomous Systems (Inter-AS) Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) over Metro Ethernet network. This service, according to Juniper Networks, harnesses an early version of any Infranet Inter-Carrier Interface (I-ICI). The infranet initiative is an industry call to the telecommunications and IT communications sector for collaboration in the definition and realisation of a public network offering the assured performance and security of private networks. Today, the IIC has more than 25 members including Lucent, Siemens, KT, China Unicom and Polycom. The Vice-President of Juniper, Mr Adam Judd, said, "This demonstration is an early implementation of both the Infranet Client-Network Interface (I-CNI) and the I-ICI, and underscores that the infranet is an industry effort working to maximise the value of communication networks."
