THE Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, on Wednesday said that the Centre has given concrete proposals to the Tamil Nadu Government for the setting up of a desalination plant for Chennai.

"The ball is now in the Tamil Nadu Government's court. They have to respond to the suggestions," Mr Chidambaram said at the Economic Editors' Conference while responding to a query.

He said the Ministry of Urban Development had forwarded the proposals to the TN Government.

The proposal to set up a desalination plant for Chennai was announced by the Finance Minister in his Budget speech for 2004-05.

The proposal is to set up a plant with an installed capacity of 300 million litres per day at an estimated cost of Rs 1,000 crore.

The project is to be implemented through the public-private participation route.
