Education `State should continue to fund education' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Nov. 17 THE Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi, Prof Deepak Nayyar, has said that globalisation of education has gathered momentum and commercialisation of Universities across the globe began by the 80s. Emergence of entrepreneurial spirit, lack of clarity of academic values and decline in public funding had opened the doors for the process of commercialisation. "We should not allow globalisation to shape our education. Education, particularly higher education, must continue to be financed by the State. At the same time, Universities should foster public-private partnerships and complement public funding." Prof Nayyar, however, said that there were both dangers and opportunities in globalisation of education. The dangers were that markets would decide the academic curricula apart from undermining the academic standards. On the other hand, the Universities could learn the importance of competition, responsiveness and accountability from the same markets. Delivering the Mohan Kumaramangalam Memorial Lecture on `Globalisation and Education' at the Administrative Staff College of India on Wednesday, Prof Nayyar said the reputation of Universities was at risk in the process of globalisation of education, which should not be allowed. In the next millennium, he said, the wealth of nations would depend on the ideas that were embedded in their education systems.
