Education Surprises for CAT exam students this year too Anjali Prayag
Bangalore , Nov. 21 NEARLY 1,50,000 students who took the CAT (Common Admission Test) exam on Sunday were in for a surprise, though not a nasty one like last year's. The entrance test to the six IIMs and 15 other premier business schools caught students unawares because of the way it was structured, says Mr Prahlad Rao, Director, Career Plan, a Bangalore-based training institute for the management entrance test. According to him, there were three major changes in the way the questions were administered this year. One was the number of questions, 123, which has been the lowest so far. "Every year, they have been reducing the number of questions," he said. The second is the way the paper is designed. "There were two parts to the question paper. Part A carried lesser weightage and Part B more weightage." The third is the deviation from knowledge-based questions to aptitude-based questions. "This is to test the ability of persons who have made choices under pressure," said Mr Rao. Unfortunately, several students were disappointed with their performance because it did not give enough edge to somebody who has put in a lot of effort in preparation. "It only has helped students who have `thought over' before the exam," according to Mr Rao, adding that the CAT exam this year has been designed to predict good managerial behaviour. It may be recalled that last year the examination process was marred by incidents of question paper leaks and a retest administered two months later.
