IN a move that will benefit India, the US Congress has passed a measure that would increase skilled worker visas by 20,000, including of the H-1B category.

This measure was part of the massive $388 billion spending bill that lawmakers passed over the weekend before heading home at the end of this session.

This particular bill came up because of requests from employers who stressed that the requests for H-1B visas were much higher than the full quota allocation. But the two Republican sponsors of the bill, Senator Mr Saxby Chambliss of Georgia and Representative Mr Lamar Smith of Texas, put forth their proposal of increase but with the proviso that these skilled workers must have a Master's or Doctoral degree from educational institutions in the US. The current cap on the H-1B visa is 65,000 a year substantially down from the previous high of 195,000;and nationals of India are said to account for the highest numbers within this H-1B category.
