Tyres Truck, bus tyre output recovers K.R. Srivats
NEW DELHI: Truck and bus tyre production staged a recovery in September to touch 9.23 lakh units. Production in this category had dipped to 8.91 lakh units in August, against 9.53 lakh units registered in July. Production was 9.07 lakh units in September last year. Truck and bus tyre category accounts for over 70 per cent of the turnover (in value terms) of the domestic tyre industry. Export performance too was impressive in September with the total number of tyres exported in this category touching 2.58 lakh. This is the industry's best performance so far in the current fiscal. Exports were 1.84 lakh units in August and 2 lakh units during September 2003. Production of truck and bus tyres increased 2.67 per cent in the first six months (April-September 2004) of the current fiscal to 54.63 lakh as compared to 53.21 lakh in the same period last year. Exports increased 4.28 per cent to touch 11.44 lakh units (10.97 lakh units ). According to the automotive tyre manufacturers' association (ATMA), passenger car tyre production by ATMA member companies during September stood at 9.87 lakh units (9.80 lakh in August) and against 10.09 lakh during July. Production of light commercial vehicle tyres stood at 3.32 lakh tyres during September (3.18 lakh in August).
