SSI `SMEs unable to exploit scope of globalisation' Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 23 THE Minister for Small-Scale Industry and Agro Rural Industries (SSI &ARI), Mr Mahabir Prasad, on Tuesday said that the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in most countries were unable to fully harness opportunities created by globalisation due to the lack of a proper institutional framework. Inaugurating a two-day international conference on `India global summit on SMEs', Mr Prasad said that the Small Enterprise Development Bill, currently under the process of being enacted, was also expected to substantially improve the working environment for the SME units. The conference has been organised jointly by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Ministry of Small-Scale Industries. Addressing the conference, the Secretary SSI & ARI, Mr Anupam Dasgupta, said that the sector faced many challenges, including the fact that products, processes, technologies were constantly changing and trade barriers were being lowered thereby exposing the industry to external factors. Mr Dasgupta pointed out that while there were several problems facing the sector, it had some unique strengths such as abundant talent, innovation and quick adaptability.
