Shipping Baalu for sharing scientific facts on Sethusamudram Our Correspondent
Madurai , Nov. 23 THE implementation of the Sethusamudram Canal project is essential not only for the overall development of the nation but also from the national security angle, the Union Minister for Shipping, Mr T.R. Baalu, has said. Expressing a willingness to share the scientific facts about the project for those interested in the marine life in the Gulf of Mannar, the Minister emphasised that the project has been taken up after a careful verification of all aspects. The coral reefs would not be harmed and they are miles away from the proposed alignment of the canal. The Government would provide also protection and compensation in case the fishermen's boats got damaged. Only a few organisations are against the project and the Government is willing to meet the challenges, if any, legally, he said while speaking at an awareness seminar on the project at Manamelgudi in Pudukottai district, near here.
