Our Correspondent

Madurai , Nov. 23

A BHOOMI PUJA was performed on Monday at the proposed site for industrial estate at Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district.

According to the site engineer, Mr V. Muthukrishnan of the US-based project partner, Advanced Technology Manufacturing and Assembly City Ltd, substantial funds has been allotted to start work.

The project has been promoted by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, for which foundation stone was laid in 2001.

After the completion of the preliminary works, construction works are expected to start from December-end this year and the project may become functional by 2008.

The project would come up on an area of about 2,093 acres between Nanguneri and Vallioor, near Tirunelveli.

It will involve an investment of Rs 700 crore on provision of basic infrastructure as per actual proposal. Non-polluting less water-intensive and hi-tech industries dealing with electronics, telecom, computer hardware, entertainment electronics etc are to be set up.

The new investment in the hi-tech park is expected to be around Rs 6,000 crore, providing employment opportunities for 1,10,000 persons.

To be developed as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), it will offer attractive tax concessions, the sources said.
