Our Correspondent

Madurai , Nov. 23

THE area under mulberry cultivation is to be increased as part of promotion of sericulture in the Tiruchi region.

According to the District Collector, Mt V. Pandian, a special subsidy-based `catalytic development programme' is to be implemented for the purpose. Apart from sanction of loans of which 50 per cent would be a subsidy to small and marginal farmers.

The subsidy component would be provided in the form of tools, racks, tiers, berths and other equipments.

Drip irrigation would be promoted in mulberry gardens. Women farmers belonging to the SC/ST will be eligible for 90 per cent subsidy on the cost of installation of irrigation system while other women farmers will get 70 per cent subsidy.

Thanks to adoption of sericulture as an alternative in the wake of consecutive drought years has helped to bring 426 acres in the region under mulberry cultivation, he added, while presiding over an inaugural of a seminar on `Sericulture' at Manachanallur in Tiruchi district, near here.
