Geography quiz

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: Marking the GIS Day, Spatial Networks Pvt Ltd is organising a geography quiz, map awareness and `detect the change' contest here on November 25.

"The idea is to promote the concept of GIS (Geographical Information System) among the school children," a company executive told Business Line. About 600 students from 100 schools in the twin cities were expected to take part in the competitions.

"GIS has come of age. The school children may not know what GIS is all about. But it touches our lives. People have started using the system to solve problems related to environment, healthcare, land use and business efficiency. Our aim is to tell them (the school children) how GIS is evolving as an important tool," he said.

Referring to the three competitions, he said the `Detect the change' contest would give the students opportunities for studying maps to monitor changes in the weather. They would be given three different satellite images for three successive months. Spatial Networks runs a magazine titled Geospatial Today, focussing on GIS and its applications.
