HLL's Mumbai sales office implements total productive maintenance

Mumbai , Nov. 24

HINDUSTAN Lever Ltd's (HLL) Mumbai regional office has become the first sales operation unit to implement total productive maintenance (TPM), a tool for process excellence, in sales operations in any industry anywhere.

HLL's Mumbai Regional Office received TPM Level-One certification. TPM is usually applied in factories.

HLL applied TPM to sales operations in 2002 in its Mumbai regional office.

"HLL has introduced TPM in sales operations, after deriving benefits from it in its manufacturing operations. The objective of HLL's TPM initiative in sales operations is to become the best-in-class service provider by reorienting office processes," a press release said.

The Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM), which accords TPM certification worldwide, has now certified that HLL's Mumbai regional office has achieved the Level-One certification.

HLL has already rolled out TPM in its sales operations across the country in its other three regional offices too in Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata. These offices will come up for audit by the JIPM in the coming years.

The implementation of TPM in the Mumbai Regional Office has brought about improvements such as improved delivery time to redistribution stockists, drastic reduction in damaged stocks, significant improvement in claims settlement, and in-transit stock display.

HLL began to implement TPM in manufacturing since 1994. At present, TPM is in different stages of implementation in 28 factories. Four HLL factories have already received the TPM Consistency Award, and 14 factories have been awarded with the TPM Excellence Award.
