FedEx designs packaging solutions for fashion world

L. N. Revathy

Coimbatore , Nov. 24

FEDEX Express has evolved a tailor-made solution `FedEx Solutions for the Fashion World' to address the distinct packaging needs of the Indian fashion customer.

The Managing Director of FedEx Express (Indian Subcontinent), Mr Jacques Creeten, who was in the city recently told Business Line that these packaging solutions would cost the customer nothing extra.

The company offers a suite of special packaging options to the fashion industry.

Claiming that FedEx was the only express transportation company to offer the range of packaging options, Mr Creeten said it was not just confined to moving goods from one place to another, but was a holistic proposition that addressed the entire supply chain.

The company's technology solutions such as FedEx Global Trade Manager assist customers in the preparation of essential paperwork.

"Customers would be able to identify Customs documents that should go with the international shipments. This solution saves time and reduces potential border delays."

By integrating its global network and providing ground solution in addition to the 643 aircraft it operates, the company has been able to connect key global markets within just 48 hours.

But Mr Creeten admits that there is a trend of seasonality in this business.

"In the US, it peaks before Christmas because of increased shopping, production, but here the peak season is March. We are hoping to see some change in this trend with the Indian producers cashing in on the opportunities. The market is still young," he said.

FedEx had moved on to the next level in the last decade and its current strategy is "Vision, Value and Virtual," he said.

The company has been eyeing the garment industry in India as an important area of growth.

"But the problem with the Indian industry is in regulatory procedures and Customs clearance issues.

"The Global Trade Manager Solution is fully compliant with the US Government regulations," Mr Creeten said.

Reverting to the Indian scenario, he observed the need for strengthening infrastructure, be it road, airport or rail. "This is the single biggest contribution that the Government can make.

"With a majority of the units still engaged in manufacturing processes, strengthening the infrastructural framework is very important for moving goods, for distribution.

"Airports are congested, processes have still not been automated and, above all, the law does not permit airlifting of certain items. This is a very small segment though," he said.

When asked about India specific investment, he said technology investments alone touched a high of $2.1 billion during the current year.

The company has invested in dedicated daily flights, nationwide toll-free connectivity, grooming marketing and sales personnel, enhancing operational capabilities and developing a system for hassle-free customs clearance.
