Our Bureau

Kolkata , Nov. 24

THE Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BNCCI) today paid rich tributes to the industrialist R.N. Mukherjee, better known as `Sir Rajen', on the occasion of his 150th birth anniversary. Mr S.N. Nundy, President of BNCCI, who described Mukherjee as "the foremost industrialist of contemporary Bengal", referred to his accidental meeting with Bradford Leslie, the then chief engineer of Calcutta Corporation, which was the turning point in his career. In 1902, Mukherjee founded Martin & Co jointly with Acquin Martin, which later became Martin Burn. Many buildings, such as Esplanade Mansions, were designed by him.
