FINALLY Disney is here. Disney Channel and Toon Disney Channel will be launched in India on December 17, 2004.

Walt Disney Television International Asia Pacific has signed a multi-year deal with STAR Group (STAR) to distribute Disney Channel and Toon Disney Channel in India.

Disney Channel will comprise a mix of original programming including animated movies and series, as well as specials, sitcoms, family dramas, live action adventure stories and movies. Toon Disney Channel will comprise animation programmes drawn from Disney and Saban libraries.

The deal was announced on Thursday by Mr Doug Miller, Executive Vice-President, Walt Disney, and Ms Michelle Guthrie, CEO of STAR.

"The Disney brand is incredibly strong in India and has a natural resonance with Indian kids and families. This strong brand affinity makes India a natural market for us to launch a Disney Channel and also introduce the region's first ever Toon Disney Channel," a press release said quoting Mr Miller.

The channels become a part of Star bouquet. Walt Disney's choice of Star was driven by the fact that it has a "successful track record in delivering compelling content".

"The strength of Disney brand will also give us incredible strength in marketing the channels and attracting more viewers to our services," the release quoted Ms Guthrie as saying. India is one of the world's largest kids audiences with a 30 million cable & satellite TV audience under the age of 14 in urban India alone.

"The launch of Disney Channel and Toon Disney will not only have a major impact on the way the Disney brand is enjoyed in India but also in the development of the Indian pay television business," the release quoted Mr Rajat Jain, Managing Director, Walt Disney Company (India) Pvt. Ltd.
