Kerala ideal for biotech, IT initiatives: Muthunayagam

Thiruvananthapuram , Nov. 25

BIOTECHNOLOGY, nanotechnology and information technology will together shape the future and will form the foundation of tomorrow's world, said Dr A.E. Muthunayagam, Executive Vice-President (Designate), Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment.

He made this observation while inaugurating a conference on `Steroid hormone receptor super family and molecular signalling' organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) - Thiruvananthapuram.

Technologies such as biotechnology and information technology are ideal for a State such as Kerala, which does not have much land for heavy industry, but has a large number of well-educated young people, he said.

The State Government has recognised the potential Kerala has in these areas and is making all efforts to harness this, he added.

For India to become a superpower, the country's scientists must generate knowledge, share knowledge and use knowledge for socio-economic benefit, he declared.

Commenting on the conference's theme, Dr Muthunayagam pointed out that defects in signalling events associated with hormone actions are directly and indirectly responsible for several human diseases. A full knowledge of the molecular signals of a hormone action would help in the treatment of those diseases, he added.

Researchers, scientists and students from across the world are participating in the three-day symposium that will focus on molecular signalling mechanisms that are fundamental to the action of steroid hormones. The symposium will have 10 scientific sessions and 30 invited lectures.
