Horticulture/Fruits & Vegetables `Good scope for horticulture in Tiruvarur district' Our Correspondent
Madurai , Nov. 25 TIRUVARUR district has good potential for promotion of horticultural crops, according to Mr K. Palanisamy, AGM, Nabard. While detailing the potential-linked credit plan for the district for 2005-06, he said that the district has about 3,469 hectares of current fallow land and 5,893 hectares of other fallow land.Further, every year 600-1,000 hectares of saline/alkaline area is reclaimed, a portion of which could be used for developing horticultural crops like tamarind and amla. Of the total cultivated area in the district, about 3.7 per cent constituting just 5,800 hectares is under plantation and horticulture crops. The district lacks a State horticulture farm and the private horticulture nurseries are too small in size. Also, the district lacks a collection centre for various horticulture and plantation produce, though there are 95 such centres in the State. Potential exists for increasing the area under cultivation of jasmine, the demand for which is met from other districts. Further, medicinal plants like ashwagandha, nithyakalyani and aloe vera could be successfully cultivated in the district, he said.
