Outlook Steris Corp gets ready to enter India Our Bureau
Kolkata, Nov. 25 THE $1-billion Steris Corporation, a sterilisation equipment manufacturer of the US, is eagerly waiting for India to take its first tentative step towards improving its healthcare system. On its own, the company has taken up a phased initiative to sensitise policymakers, hospitals, physicians and paramedics towards technologies to prevent infection and contamination in two emerging Asian economies India and China, Mr John Kurowaski, the Manager for global clinical education services extension, told Business Line here recently. "In April this year, the Government set up a working group to examine extent of hospital infection and to look into current sterilisation and disinfecting procedures in hospitals. The group made surveys in some of the country's leading hospitals. The broad findings are scary. We feel the Government will have to take action on a war footing to stem the rot," observed Mr Biswarup Ghosh, Country Manager of Steris. According to the expert group, the hospital sector in the country needs thorough reforms as a large section of patients in India are affected by hospital infection. Though no authentic data is available, the Mumbai-based Hospital Infection Society puts the figure at as high as 25 per cent of the total number of patients admitted. The group has recommended fresh legislation to establish an organisation that adopts the best international practices to ensure the use of sterilised products. It has also suggested that a comprehensive plan to implement modern sterilisation technologies be worked out. The expert group felt that the Drug Control Act of India, 1945 is no way enough to ensure sanitation in the healthcare delivery system.
