Tea prices spurt at Kochi auction

A GOOD general demand resulted in the spurting of prices of almost all varieties of tea at the Kochi tea auction.

Of the quantity of 9,87,000 kg on offer in the dust category, good medium finer CTCs were steady to firm and sometimes dearer. High priced CTCs barely steady, while bolder CTCs tended to ease. Orthodox highgrown dust grades were tending lower. Mediums and secondaries were easier by Rs 2-3.

The best CTC varieties commanded prices between Rs 55 and Rs 65, medium CTC realised Rs 50-54 and below medium were quoted Rs 43-46. Highgrown BOPD fetched prices at Rs 80, while mediums realised Rs 40-42. Secondaries were quoted at Rs 33-36.

The leaf sale also witnessed a good general demand and the quantity on offer was 3,87,000 kg. Highgrown brokens and fannings firm to dearer. Good quality medium bolder brokens and fannings were steady. Others tended to ease. Good medium CTC, smaller brokens and fannings steady to sometimes dearer. Other CTCs irregular. Good orthodox witnessed demand from CIS exporters.

The best Nilgiri varieties commanded prices between Rs 66 and Rs 85, medium orthodox realised Rs 45-75 and plain orthodox were quoted Rs 40-43. The best CTC leaf fetched prices between Rs 52 and Rs 56, while medium CTC leaf realised Rs 47-51.

In the dust category, Kodanaad CL BOPD fetched the best prices of Rs 80 followed by Pasuparai SFD by Rs 79. In the leaf varieties, both Chamraj FOPS and Havukal BOPF realised the best prices of Rs 95 each followed by both Tiger Hill CL FP and Havukal FBOP quoting Rs 86 each.
