TN: More relief for farmers sought

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, should persuade the Centre to grant enhanced relief to the farmers in the Cauvery delta region who have lost their paddy crops, the Federation of Farmers' Associations of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts, has urged.

The Association General Secretary, Mr A.P. Kalyanam, in a memorandum, has said that paddy crops in more than two lakh hectares got damaged in the recent rains, resulting in a loss of Rs 600 crore, with the Nagapattinam district being worst affected.

Despite the State Government seeking Rs 411 crore from the National Calamity Fund and requesting for a team to inspect the affected areas, the Union Government is yet to respond. He added the State Government has been delaying the distribution of Rs 138 crore released by the Centre during 2003-04 as drought relief.
