ISPs No licence fee for ISPs not offering VPN services: Maran Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 30 THE Communications and IT Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, on Tuesday, said that Internet Service Providers which do not offer Virtual Private Network services will not have to pay any licence fee. The Department of Telecom had last month imposed a licence fee of 8 per cent of the annual revenues on ISPs for allowing VPN services. "There will be no impact on the cost of Internet services from the move to impose licence fee because ISPs offering only Internet services will not have to pay the licence fee. ISPs offering VPN services will have to pay the said licence fee," said Mr Maran at a press briefing called by Telecommunications Consultant of India Ltd (TCIL) to pay a dividend cheque. On the issue of fiscal sops for ISPs for broadband services, Mr Maran said that most of the sops suggested by the Communication Ministry would automatically come into effect from next year after the WTO duty regime comes into place. On the controversy over illegal routing of ILD calls, Mr Maran said the issue was being resolved between Reliance Infocomm and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. "DoT has given a show-cause notice for a penalty of Rs 150 crore and is awaiting their response," Mr Maran said.
