Effective transport system

This is with reference to the article "Ensuring problem-free gateways for exporters" (Business Line, November 29).

It is shocking that a country with 12 major ports barely satisfies the requirements of current cargo turnover and faces a shortage of mechanised equipment for loading/unloading.

Even India's vast rail network remains underused.

True, India's rail services need massive upgradation, though not necessarily through private investment. Instead, performance could be improved through effective use of the vastly underutilised resources.
