Kochi , Dec. 1

THE Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council Keralam (VFPCK), a State Government company, plans to produce 20 tonne of vegetable seeds in the current fiscal, quadrupling its production.

The `Truthfully Labelled' seeds, which have 99 per cent physical purity and 80 per cent germinating ability, are being produced at VFPCK's processing plant at Alathur in Palakkadu district.

According to Mr Ashok Kumar Thekkan, Chief Executive Officer of VFPCK, the seeds would be distributed through the State Agriculture Department. The breeder seeds were obtained from Kerala Agriculture University, before expert farmers multiplied them under the supervision of VFPCK officials.

The council has 69 farmers trained in seed production. They are organised under the Seeds Growers' Association in Palakkad.

VFPCK has launched the seeds in packets of 10 gm, 50gm, one kg. The State Agriculture Minister, Ms K.R. Gowriamma, released seeds packets at a function in the State Capital recently, according to a statement from the Council.
