Sethu project report soon

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Detailed Project Report submission on implementing the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project (SSCP) is expected during this week.

According to the Chairman of Tuticorin Port Trust, Mr N.K. Raghupathy, the project should not be viewed from income or viability. The infrastructure project is vital for the growth of the economy. Attention must be paid to the substantial benefits accruing from the project rather than insignificant drawbacks. Allaying the fears that fishing activities would be curtailed, he said that a decision has been taken to give unlimited access to fishing craft through the channel.

Finishing touches are being given to the project. On implementation, ships would save 348 nautical miles between Cap Camorin and Chennai and ships from Tuticorin to destinations such as Visakapattinam and Kolkata would save 366 nautical miles, immensely benefiting in terms of fuel and other costs, the sources said.
