Biocon looks to move out of generics in long term

Our Bureau

Chennai , Dec. 1

BIOCON'S long-term aim is to move out of making copycat drugs to discovering new drugs, the first of which is in the midst of clinical trials.

Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Biocon's Chairman and Managing Director, said the first proprietary drug (an antibody) that could be used to combat cancer has fared well in trials.

She described the company's strategy as one of using generics (copycat drugs) in the short-term, bio-generics in the medium term, and proprietary drugs in the long term. Ms Shaw was in here in connection with the launch of the company's branded insulin, Insugen.

Biocon's manufacturing capacity for insulin at 500 kg a year is the largest of its kind in Asia. Insulin is expected to contribute a significant extent of revenue over the next few years.
