The Hindu Business Line : `e-governance helps improve efficiency'

E-GOVERNANCE is a pressing reality that makes work easier, according Ms Shilpa George, Director-Technical, Intelligent Decisions Systems India (Pvt) Ltd, Kochi.

Speaking at a seminar on `Effectiveness of e-governance and GIS in Indian scenario', organised by the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) in Mangalore on Tuesday, she said that e-governance helps in better planning, enforcement and analytical activities.

With e-governance one can have `anytime' access to information, she said adding, this also helps in improving operational efficiency.

Technology and data come in the last phase of e-governance set-up, and Internet, global information system (GIS), smart cards and authentication technologies are used here, Ms George said.

Highlighting the role of GIS in e-governance, she said it brings together descriptive and spatial information for complete understanding of the issue in focus. GIS tools are used in tax assessment, traffic alert systems, emergency management, vegetation analysis and chemical spill analysis, she added.

The Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Mr Aravind Srivastav, who inaugurated the seminar, said that e-governance has to be started with the need for change.

The KCCI President, Mr A. Srinivasa Rao, welcomed the gathering. Capt. J.P. Menezes, Vice-President of KCCI, proposed a vote of thanks.
