Kolkata , Dec. 1

THE Chief Executive Officer, President and Managing Director of Infosys Technologies Ltd, Mr Nandan M. Nilekani, today presented a strong case for deployment of information technology (IT) in governance (governmental administration) and said a strong link existed between good governance and IT.

Speaking at the Infocom 2004 Conference & Exhibition here on Wednesday, Mr Nilekani said that the challenge, however, would be to deploy technology effectively in government. Deploying IT in government work would go a long way in facilitating information access to the people at large.

In the long term, improving the quality of governance would help improve global competitiveness.

Mr Nilekani cited instances of select sectors of the economy, such as telecommunications and banking, where competition had led to the deployment of technology in a big way.

"In these sectors, technology has been deployed to reduce costs and delivery time, and for acquisition and retention of customers. Competitive intensity will drive the need for deployment of technology,'' he said.

According to him, IT could be used to create the right kind of date bases to facilitate identification of the beneficiaries of various government schemes.

He highlighted the need for sustainable disclosure norms in the public space and said that deployment of IT could make disclosures achievable targets.

"India has provided solutions in the e-governance space to other nations. So, why can't we do that for ourselves here in India," he asked.
