AP Govt urged to take up Janjhavati project

Visakhapatnam , Dec. 1

THE Visakhapatnam chapter of Indian Meteorological Society and the local centre of the Institute of Engineers have appealed to the State Government to take up Janjhavati project after resolving the pending inter-State issues with the Orissa Government. They said the project is essential to meet the industrial water requirements of Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Dr J.V.M. Naidu, the Chairman of the IMS, and Prof T. Sivaji Rao, the environmentalist, said that though the mega Polavaram project on the Godavari would meet the requirements of the three north-coastal districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam in the long run, the Government should also pay attention to the three projects - Madduvalasa, Thotapalli reservoir and Janjhavati - which would cost Rs 650 crore.

The Janjhavathi project in particular would be of great use to both Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, they said. It had been pending since 1975.

If the State Government could sort out the minor problem of submergence with the Orissa Government, it would be a viable project. "The people in the Orissa villages facing submersion are willing to sacrifice their lands if the AP Government comes up with a reasonable rehabilitation package," they said.

Experts opined that these irrigation projects are of vital importance to the three north-coastal districts.
