Levy on goods

transport agencies

This is with reference to the article `Service tax on goods transport agencies soon' (Business Line, December 1). The levy will hit every person who uses the freight agencies.

On the other hand, the government hesitates to levy service tax on all vakalat forms signed by advocates. For all cases where the fee is upwards of Rs 5,000, there should be a 5 per cent tax levied. Likewise, all TV channels must be charged with a 3 per cent service tax payable by the channels. Service tax must also be charged on all activities where sales tax is not levied. It would be better if the government left out those services that are crucial to the daily need of the people.
