Milk prices likely to go up in Kerala

Our Buerau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State Government is examining a proposal to raise the price of milk marketed by Milma, the cooperative marketing federation, by Re 1.

Announcing this, the Agriculture Minister, Ms K.R. Gowri Amma, told newspersons here on Saturday that the rise in the selling price would provide relief to the dairy farmers and the lower-level cooperative societies. The hike was inevitable considering the all-round increase in commodity prices brought about by higher inflation levels.

Besides, the dairy sector provided employment to women folk, who would benefit from the price hike.

According to the Minister, the lack of required supplies of fodder had affected milk production. Steps were also being initiated to make most use of the idle land in farms under Government ownership.

The Minister said the Agriculture Department had launched numerous development programmes during the Chief Minister's 100-day programme.
