THE Builders Association of India (BAI) has called for the creation of a separate ministry for the construction industry.
At its fourth State-level meeting held at Palayamottai in Tirunelveli recently, through a resolution the association has said that the establishment of a ministry would help to solve the problems faced by the industry without any delay.
It has further urged the Centre to reconsider the decision to levy service tax on the construction industry. Suggesting the inclusion of an `escalation clause' in all the tenders to compensate the differences in the cost of materials resulting from the frequent increases in prices of fuel, steel and cement, the association further called for the establishment of a regulatory authority to monitor the prices of materials in the open market.
By another resolution, the association sought the inclusion of BAI functionaries in high-level committees of the sector for proper planning and policy recommendations. While observing that the lowering of interest rates on housing loans has not helped to spur construction activity in the State, it said the State Government should ensure that local bodies did not delay the plan approvals. It appealed for a reduction of sales tax imposed on ready-made items such as doors, grills and flooring tiles.
By another resolution it said that the Government should facilitate downloading of all tender schedules from the Web sites of the departments concerned to ensure competitive price for Government projects, sources added.
