Bangalore , Dec. 6

DESPITE annoying traffic snarls and potholed roads, Bangaloreans have found reasons to celebrate the spirit of the city. It's time for `Bangaluru Habba' (Festival of Bangalore) again.

In spite of protests by local activists who alleged that the Habba did not represent the true culture of the city and that it was encouraging an `MNC culture,' the second edition of the festival has managed to garner a 90 per cent turnout at most of the venues, according to the Artistes' Foundation for Arts (AFFA), the organiser of the event.

Speaking to Business Line, Ms Padmini Ravi, danseuse and member of AFFA, said, "I accept that we should have had a Sahitya Sammelana. But we could not mainly because of lack of funds and not because of lack of interest."

She added that the response to the festival was `excellent' in terms of participants, audience and sponsors.

The festival is estimated to cost around Rs 1.2 crore.

The corporate sector has pitched in its support by sponsoring events.

ING Vysya, Spice Telecom, ABB and Café Coffee Day are some of the leading sponsors of the events.

One of the major attractions of the week-long festival (Dec 5-12) is the art walkway on MG Road's Boulevard. Potters, painters, fashion designers and even bakers have lined up the boulevard with their wares.

Apart from theatre festivals and concerts, the Habba this year is being celebrated at four heritage temples of Bangalore — Someshwara, Banashankari, Basavanagudi and Kada Malleswara with satsangs, classical music and Veda recitals. Ten Mahanagara Palike parks in the city will host folk music concerts every evening throughout the week, said Ms Ravi. Entry to all the events is free, except the English Theatre Festival at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.
