Rise in cement majors' Nov shipments

Dec. 6
THE cement majors in the country have reported increased despatches year-on-year, for November 2004, although the increase is as wide ranging as 6 per cent (in the case of Gujarat Ambuja) and 13.4 per cent (in the case of UltraTech Cement).
The other feature of this month has been that the percentage increase in production reported by most of the individual companies is higher than their percentage increase in dispatches.
The wide-ranging nature of increases is due to both geographical factors as well as one-time factor like plant maintenance, said a cement industry analyst.
ACC reported a 12.9 per cent increase at 13.75 lakh tonnes for November; dispatches during the same month of the previous year had been 12.17 lakh tonnes. Production was higher by 22.4 per cent at 14.26 lakh tonnes (11.65 lakh tonnes).
Shipments at Gujarat Ambuja grew 6 per cent to 11.48 lakh tonnes (10.82 lakh tonnes). Production stood at 11.66 lakh tonnes for November, amounting to a growth of 11 per cent over the corresponding year-ago figure (10.51 lakh tonnes).
UltraTech Cement reported a 13.51 per cent increase at 10.45 lakh tonnes (9.21 lakh tonnes), while production was up by 14.18 per cent to 11.08 lakh tonnes (9.7 lakh tonnes).
Grasim reported a 9.38 per cent increase at 10.98 lakh tonnes (10.04 lakh tonnes); and a 9.12 per cent increase in production at 11.1 lakh tonnes (10.17 lakh tonnes).
Officials at cement majors were also of the general opinion that prices, which have been stable in the last three or four months, are likely to firm up, even in the southern region which has been the worst geography for the industry for some time now.
