Watershed development scheme at Sivaganga dt.

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Kayangulam watershed development programme in Sivaganga district, funded by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (Nabard), has helped to successfully turn more than 1,000 acres of barren lands into cultivable lands.

Started as a pilot project in 2002 at an outlay of Rs 45 lakh, with the Association of Sarva Seva Farms (ASSFA) as the facilitating agency, about 862 hectares belonging to 360 owners in different parts of the Sivaganga block were brought under the programme.

Following reorganisation of the lands, long-term crops including mango, tamarind, nelli and nava were planted along with short-term crops and fodder-items with complete fencing of the area.

According to the Project-in-charge, Mr P. Thangaiah, following the implementation of the programme, the sale of lands has come down drastically and the cost of the land has also increased with their cultivability established now.
