Telecommunications Government - Politics Corporate - Corporate Disputes Illegal routing of ILD calls: CPI(M) demands dismissal of TRAI chief Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 6 THE CPI(M) on Monday asked the Government to dismiss the Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Mr Pradeep Baijal, for acting in "connivance" with private operators in avoiding payment of access deficit charges (ADC) to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). The party also accused the Communication and IT Minister, Mr Dayanidhi Maran, of misleading Parliament by underplaying the loss from illegal routing of long distance calls. Accusing private telecom operators, including Reliance Infocomm, of fleecing State-owned BSNL, Mr Nilotpal Basu, CPI(M), said: "Government must sack the TRAI Chairman, Mr Baijal immediately and ask TRAI to go for full-fledged investigation. The investigation should also see how Department of Telecom has acted beyond law by issuing a show-cause notice to Reliance."
Mr Baijal, when contacted, did not offer any comments. Hehad earlier said that TRAI had no role in settling the dispute between the two companies since the telecom tribunal and the DoT were the appropriate authorities. Mr Basu, however, took on the TRAI stance and said, "How can Mr Baijal say that he is not a policeman and he does not have powers to investigate? The TRAI Act empowers the authority to ensure compliance of terms and conditions of licence,'' Mr Basu said.
