Bhopal gas tragedy

It is sad to note that even though 20 years have passed since the Bhopal gas tragedy, the victims continue to suffer due to the never-ending legal process. They are yet to receive suitable and sufficient compensation for the catastrophe.

The proclaimed offenders are still at large due to the absence of extradition treaties between India and their home country, the US. It is high time the Government set up an independent commission headed by a retired Supreme Court Judge to look into the legal tangles and expedite the process of getting sufficient damages from the default company, M/s Union Carbide, and distribute the same to the victims.

Such an incident in a country like the US would not have faced such prolonged legal wrangling as the laws are very stringent, with time bound disposal of legal cases.
