THE State Government is planning to set up several institutions for the care of the aged, the Minister for Education, Mr E.T. Mohammed Basheer, has said. However, efforts by the Government alone are not sufficient, he added.
Non-governmental organisations and institutions in the private sector must work with the Government to solve the problems of the elderly, the Minister said while inaugurating a seminar on `Demographic changes and implications' organised by the Department of Demography, University of Kerala.
The Minister also emphasised the need for universities in Kerala to pay more attention to research. Organisations such as the University Grants Commission are willing to provide financial support to research projects, he said.
The two-day seminar is being organised as part of the silver jubilee celebrations of the Department of Demography, University of Kerala. Themes that will be discussed during the event include reproductive health, nutrition and socio-economic aspects of demography, ageing, health and morbidity and women's empowerment.
