`Strong ethical panels needed'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The President of the Indian National Science Academy, Dr M.S. Valiathan, has stressed the need to strengthen institutional ethical committees in research organisations by enhancing their capacity to review and conduct clinical trials for research purposes.

Dr Valiathan said this while delivering the Dr P.K. Gopalakrishnan Memorial lecture on Ethics in Clinical Research at the Centre for Development Studies here on Monday.

The Indian Council for Medical Research, responsible for evolving guidelines for conducting clinical trials, has met with a poor response and hence it was important that core members of the ethical committees were trained and equipped to investigate clinical research trials thoroughly.
