Computer literacy scheme

Our Bureau

KOCHI: Computer education major NIIT and the Rotary District 3200 have joined hands in Kerala to spread computer literacy by training under-privileged youngsters in basic computing skills.

NIIT will impart its weeklong `Swift' course to the youth sponsored by the Rotary District 3200. The course, which has a fee of Rs 1,250, is being offered to the Rotary at Rs 350 per student, said Mr S. Venkatesh, Vice-President of NIIT Ltd. For every person sponsored by the Rotary District 3200, NIIT will train another one free of charge, Mr Venkatesh said here at a press conference. "We would like to take this programme to other (Rotary) districts and may be to international level," he said.

According to Rotary District Governor Dr C.M. Aboobacker, the 140 Rotary clubs in the district would sponsor 20 people each for the training after preliminary screening.

"Rotary is undertaking this programme in association with NIIT as part of youth service to give the economically backward youth computer literacy," he said.
